Title: Echo Chamber Heist
Word Count: 82,000.
Hogwarts House: Ravenclaw, because Raquel is interested in engineering.
Pitch: In a fantasy 19th century world, a would-be engineer befriends a fiery magician and a technology mogul in a quest to stop a dangerous scheme to mine the stars.
First 250:
“Who amongst you does not yearn to fly?”
A breeze carried the man’s deep voice from the market into Raquel’s dingy tenement flat. She groaned and rolled away from the window. The landlord had boasted about the convenience of neighboring a marketplace, but neglected to mention the salesmen. Like horrible roosters, they strutted outside her window every morning and woke her with their incessant crowing.
“Do you remember your first train ride? Gliding through the plains, the chug of the engine as steadfast as the beating of your own heart?”
This salesman was talented, Raquel conceded, before she pulled a scratchy blanket over her face.
“The Amazing Drake goes from ordinary crate to airborne marvel in minutes. First, simply expand the crate into a gondola with this handy built-in ratchet.”
Raquel opened one eye and braved a glimpse of the bright morning. Most salesmen hawked miracle cures or beauty supplies, neither of which were worth her lost sleep. But this device sounded … peculiar. Either the barker was mad, or he was angling at a tinkerer’s take on snake oil.
“What makes The Amazing Drake so, well, amazing is the Vapeur aether burner.”
The use of Raquel’s family name startled her out from under the covers. She couldn’t miss an opportunity to see her father’s invention in use. Cringing at the feeling of the gritty floor against her bare feet, she crossed the room to the window and leaned out into the cool morning.
