That's So Punny!

You don't have to look far on this blog to discover the fact that I'm a little, shall we say, different from the norm? I've had a lot of people try to think up the perfect label for me (people are sweet like that), but words like freak, geek, nerd, weirdo, neurotic lunatic, etc . . . But I'm not sure they really capture the ESSENCE of what it is to be Kim.

That's one of the awesome things about blogging--each post is an opportunity to explore a different facet of one's individual oddity. This particular post is about the fact that I am a huge appreciator of the punny. Sickeningly so. I'll be watching a show with Neil in the evening and a funky bit of wordplay will play out on the screen, and I will LAUGH SO HARD I ALMOST FALL OFF THE BED.

Okay, to be truthful, I often DO fall off the bad. I'm maladaptively (according to spell check I made that word up! Score!) coordinated like that.

And Neil looks over at me with this expression on his face that is half fond amusement and half who-the-heck-is-this-chick-and-where's-the-quiet-shy-girl-I-married-eleven-years-ago? I keep telling him . . . alien body snatchers, honey. It's the most logical explanation.

Other people, they groan when I break out the punny. Me? I giggle so hard that, horrifyingly, those commercials for adult diapers finally start to make sense.

Sometimes, I meet others of my kind, and instead of rolling their eyes when I break out the puns, they practically crumple to the ground, as if the punny hilariousness is a physical force scrunching them up into a wee little ball of condensed amusement. And when that happens, the laughter multiplies exponentially and for a while, I CANNOT BREATHE, because together we are THAT hilarious.

And when I'm exhausted (see previous post) or feeling down (see lots of other posts - seriously, I whine a LOT), I remember moments like that. They're my anchors during the storms of life.

“We’re all a little weird. And life is weird. And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall into mutually satisfying weirdness—and call it love.”

― Robert Fulghum

Mutually satisfying weirdness. That's one of my favouritest things EVER. And the best thing about getting older (besides getting to eat whatever I darn well like for breakfast, whether it be cereal - ha ha - or cake), is how many more amazingly awesome people I meet who I feel that connection of mutual weirdness with. Love you guys, you make me happy to me.
